Atelier

We produce locally, responsibly and respectfully.

Since the beginning, Menzer Hajiyeva has consciously chosen to locate the brand's production facilities in Goradil, a quaint village nestled near Baku, Azerbaijan. This village holds a special place in Menzer's heart, lying close to her family's summer house—a place where she grew up. Familiar with the community and feeling a deep sense of freedom and inspiration there, Menzer knew it was the perfect environment to share this spirit with future artisans. Today, a dedicated team of 5 artisans works to bring the designs conceptualized in Menzer's London studio to life.

Within the walls of our atelier, the ancient art of kelagayi making thrives under the hands of skilled local artisans. This revered craft, recognized as a significant part of the world's intangible heritage by UNESCO, involves a delicate process where patterns are imprinted onto silk using wooden or metal stamps dipped in hot wax. The scarves are then bathed in cool dye baths, a meticulous and labor-intensive process that demands precision and patience, especially when introducing additional colors. Each step, from the careful application of wax to the final dye bath, is executed with precision, embodying the essence of true craftsmanship.

Becoming a "boyagchi," or colorist, in our atelier is not just a role; it's a mark of prestige and a testament to the depth of skill and dedication required to master this art. We believe that luxury goes beyond the material, rooted deeply in the conditions under which it is created. Our atelier is more than a place of work; it's a sanctuary where safety, ethics, and love for the craft form the foundation of everything we do.

At Menzer Hajiyeva, each kelagayi scarf is meticulously handcrafted, carrying the legacy of Azerbaijani culture into the present. We are committed to empowering women and fostering a new generation of female artisans, offering them not only employment but a chance to partake in preserving a craft that is woven into the fabric of our history. Our training programs are rigorous, designed not only to teach the skills necessary for kelagayi making but also to ignite a passion for this ancient art. Those who choose to stay with us become part of our family, contributing their unique talents to our collective endeavor of bringing heritage and luxury together.

The well-being of our artisans stands at the core of our mission. We pride ourselves on creating an environment that is as nurturing as it is productive, ensuring that every kelagayi reflects the love, care, and respect it was made with. In our atelier, luxury is not just created; it is lived, breathed, and shared, making every scarf a piece of art that carries the heart and soul of Azerbaijan to the world.
